REAL Hunger Games

I’ll admit, I’m a huge fan of the Hunger Games novels. And I’m going to see the movie tomorrow…totally thrilled!

For those of you unfamiliar with the Hunger Games series, there are 12 Districts, each of which has a specialization. Even though Katniss, Gale and Peeta are all from District 12, I’m a fan of District 11. If you don’t know why, this might give you a clue.

District 11 is the Agriculture district where a lot of the food for the country is grown. Who knew it would be a fashion trend, too! There are other districts are that involved in growing food, like District 9: Grain, or District 10: Livestock, or District 4: Fishing, or 5 & 6, who are Power and Transportation, respectively. These all have to do with agriculture.

rueEven though this book is fiction, there is a lot of reality in our world that a majority of food is only grown in certain parts of the world. There are areas in the U.S. (like most of the Midwest) where the land is perfect for growing crops. There are other areas where it is most suitable for cattle or other livestock to graze (like in my home state of Colorado). Other areas are better for rice or canola or sugarcane or soybeans or tomatoes, etc., etc.

All of these food crops and livestock are going to be a solution to feeding the world.

The truth is, our world’s population is predicted to reach 9 billion by 2050 – that’s just 39 years from now. Only 39 more harvests or 39 more calving seasons to produce food for 2 billion more people than today.

Dr. Ronnie Green from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has an excellent blog talking about this topic and how we are going to be able to produce more food, feed and fuel for the future. Check it out here.

Just a few topics to remember when you hear all of the hype of the Hunger Games. The world will be watching, indeed!
